Professional Mental Performance Skills for Everyone.
This is for the age grouper. The mom that just ran her first 5k. The dad who fits intervals into the wee hours so that he can make it to work on time and be present for the kids. For the college student who has just enough time between classes and homework to get in that one coffee ride and maybe a race every once in a while. And for you working days, nights, swings, or graves so that you can afford to even just line up at that destination race or buy that awesome piece of last decade gear that is still an upgrade for you.
We see you! We’re all working really hard to be pretty ok. And that’s a sincere compliment. Most athletes are just like us. We wear multiple hats and constantly have to choose which one gets our time and money and which one do we have to compromise. We aren’t doing this from a place of loss. We’re working ourselves hard, pushing to achieve the life that’s meaningful to us and those we care about. Striving and hustling for a full life.
That push can take it’s toll on our mental health. In a society that rewards singularity of purpose and surgical levels of excellence in one thing, we’re actively engaged in a pursuit that makes such achievement pretty much impossible. No one is writing articles about how we spread ourself so thin so that we delivered reliably at work while also showing up for kids, partners, self, and friends. Our social media post about personal hustle to wear all the hats is far from the most liked or commented. In the end, we’re in it for the personal wins and that can be isolating and harder to feel acknowledged despite being more challenging.
Mediocre Monsters is for us. We’re building a community and providing mental skills training and support so that this hard and meaningful path of many hats and moderate outcomes is sustainable and utterly fulfilling. The name is a bit tongue in cheek while being a sincere acknowledgement of how much effort we’re putting into being a fully realized human, both in and outside of sport. Being a Mediocre Monster isn’t easy. And because the path is personal for each, it can look very different.
The mental skills that support this long term meaningful pursuit are the same. We have actively identified our valued directions. We’ve translated those long term values in to committed action. We practice being open to challenging experiences and being mindful of who we are, our mental experiences, and our present moment. In the end, we engage actively and willingly with life as it comes and work towards new opportunities to live in a personally valued manner.
Mediocre Monsters is a brand that means mental skills and health. A community that supports each other in the pursuit of a meaningful life. And a sincere high five to the everyday athletes who may never see a podium and are win by showing up for themselves and those they care about.
Welcome to all of you Monsters. <3
Sincerely,
The Mediocre Monsters Team
